APEC China 2014 Planner May

Singapore, 5 May 2014 - Trade Ministers, Senior Officials and technical experts from APEC economies, the world’s largest regional economic grouping, will meet this month in Qingdao, China to pursue more open, integrated and productive markets which are needed to put the region on a higher growth path and bridge gaps in job creation and wages.

A joint APEC Ministers’ Responsible for Trade Meeting news conference will detail the outcomes of their talks. A joint press conference with the APEC Secretariat Executive Director and World Trade Organization Director-General beforehand will put the agenda into greater context.

Public-private sector dialogues to improve business conditions and inclusive, gender-balanced economies are also among this month’s events. See below for more:

APEC Business Advisory Council Meeting

Santiago, Chile

5-7 May

New Chilean President Michelle Bachelet will address Asia-Pacific business leaders assembled in Santiago, on the eve of APEC meetings in Qingdao, to put forward recommendations for strengthening the region’s business environment. COFCO Corporation’s Chairman of the Board, Ning Gaoning, will preside over the discussions.

Second APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and Related Meetings

Qingdao, China

5-15 May

APEC member economies’ Senior Officials, hosted by Li Baodong, Chair of the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and China’s Vice Foreign Minister, will chart the next step for regional cooperation. Decisions will draw on actions taken by officials and technical experts from working level fora who will address issues ranging from the advancement of electric vehicle standards and medical product regulation, to agriculture development and food security.

APEC Ministers’ Responsible for Trade Meeting and joint news conference

Qingdao, China

17-18 May

This year’s meeting will be hosted by Minister Gao Hucheng of China’s Ministry of Commerce. Making it easier to negotiate and implement comprehensive, high quality agreements and moving towards negotiations for a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific that includes all 21 APEC member economies will be among the focus areas. A joint press conference will take place at the meeting’s conclusion.

Joint press conference with APEC Secretariat Executive Director and World Trade Organization Director-General

APEC Secretariat Executive Director Dr Alan Bollard and World Trade Organization Director-General Roberto Azevêdo will deliver their views on regional and global trade progress and the role of APEC cooperation to ensure a robust global trading system for greater prosperity.

APEC Women and the Economy Forum

Beijing, China

21-23 May

“Harnessing the Power of Women for Asia-Pacific Prosperity” is the theme of this year’s forum. Policy actions will draw on public-private sector coordination centered on deepening women’s role in green development, trade and regional partnership, and economic empowerment.
